I'm new to the game with a level 16 ranger in Nightfall. I just finished "Hunted!" can now freely change secondary professions. Up until now I have been running a R/P spear beastmaster build, and it has been great but I've noticed I'm super poor. I can't buy the armor upgrades because it's like 5 plat per piece and I have 2 total, same with weapons and etc. So I'm looking for a good farming build that also doubles as a PvE build because I'm lazy...

Suggestions and tips are welcome!

Just play the game, if you pick up and sell a drop you will have 5-7k in no time and that is enough to buy max armor, runes or skills.

But if you really want a farming/pve build, the closest thing you will get is the SoS spirit spammer build, which isn't a ranger build.
Barrage is also an option, but that isn't really used in today's (solo)farming as far as I'm aware of.

I'd suggest you to just play the game, there will be plenty of time o farm later on.

Find a spot with enemies you can kill solo if you're lvl 16 go for lvl 10 to 12, pick up and identify everything, shouldn't take to long to save enough to buy max armor it's how I got my first set.

5 plat per piece? what armor are you trying to buy? anywho....

if you got the sunspear armor from consulate docks, that is "technically" max armor, all the other elite armors are mainly for show (and HoM) thus really provides no added bonus. just keep grinding and doing the quests, you will build up enough gold through drops before you hit desolation.

also note: save those measure for measure inscriptions. you can sell them for up to 500g each or use them on gold jeweled daggers (i think) to get diamonds or rubies or some kind of gem that everyone likes to buy

Right now is a super sucky time to be looking at the rune trader because prices are wildly inflated due to the recent update. ID all your drops and salvage useful runes for yourself. You can store on your heroes any extras that would be useful for future characters. Try your best to acquire a lot of your runes/insignias this way -- you'll save yourself a lot of money in the end. But if you do need to buy, do yourself a favor and try to wait a bit for prices to settle.

Doing quests and missions will probably be your best source of income right now, picking up and selling everything along the way. You might even consider hopping over to Factions (if you have it) and doing several of the Kaineng area quests.

To answer your specific question: Get far enough in Factions and you can cap Signet of Spirits, the Ritualist elite that is the basis of the spirit-spam build. Rangers can run it well, and it's a pretty powerful farming/PvE build. Farming feathers in Jaya Bluffs can yield you a lot of money, if sold to players. But I agree -- don't race to get to this point. Enjoy the game first. There will be plenty of time to farm/grind later.

A few money tips to gain a bit gold to get started:
* Gather 5 Gift of the Traveler every week from Nicholas the Traveler, sell them for 4-5k/each.
* Find a good place to farm feathers and iron, then sell full stacks easily to other players.
* Make an Underworld farmer and start farming for Ectos, they're worth ~7k each on player market.

Usual suggestions would be - get cheap max armor for now from the docks , carry on with nf and complete it so you have access to hm and then its farming time.HM = more cash , better drops,tomes and elite tomes etc etc - normal mode wont yield that much really from farming.If you have factions then take your chr over to seitung harbor and enter jaya bluffs and farm feathers ( 9- 10k a stack ).
As a new chr you will find that you wont be using 1 armor set but probably 2 - 4 for set builds - eg whirling blades farmer needs 1 armor set , fire imp farmer needs another .
Gifts of the traveller usually means access to other campaigns in gw and that sort of means doing all 3 campaigns and eotn so your prepared for nick.

The advice to just play the game is what to follow first. You can get through Nightfall easily enough. The R/Rit spirit spammer farming build is excellent once you have all the pieces and parts. And a lot of fun as well.

You're not going to find a good general build that doubles as "farming", at least at this stage. Generally that means balancing survival with damage, which in a full party is less necessary.

As for armor upgrades, you're a ranger, you have access to some of the cheapest in the game. Obviously Radiant and Survivor will be tempting but go with Beastmaster's for now and minor attribute runes as applicable. Vitae and Attunement are a little pricey and any Vigor will set you back, but just be patient and maybe you'll ID some valuable upgrades to sell. Keep an eye on the traders.

Also, save any gold items you find and don't ID them; they're worth 700g a piece for players grinding the Wisdom title. Lastly, check the daily Zaishen rotation of PvE quests. They can be found at Embark Beach and you might happen upon something you can do for extra money (just remember to add them to your quest log, it's easy to forget).

How am I supposed to get SOS with my ranger if Ritualist is not my primary profession?

Your primary profession doesn't matter. Just switch your secondary to Rit (if it isn't already) and obtain it by any normal means (tome/capture).
